Tamil Alphabet for Kids
தமிழ் எழுத்துக்கள்
The Tamil alphabet is easier to understand as a set of connected families. Learn the vowel letters and consonants first, then explore how they combine. Children do not need to memorise all 247 traditional forms at once.

The four groups of Tamil letters
Uyir letters are the 12 vowels. Mei letters are the 18 consonants, written with a pulli dot in their pure consonant form, such as க். Uyirmei letters are the 216 consonant-vowel combinations: 18 consonants combined with 12 vowels. Ayutham, ஃ, is a separate special letter.
Together, these are traditionally counted as 247 forms: 12 + 18 + 216 + 1. This is a description of the writing system, not a suggested first lesson.
See how a combination works
In க் + அ = க, the consonant joins the vowel அ. With ஆ, the same consonant becomes கா. Some vowel signs appear before the consonant, some after it, and some around it. The written position of a sign does not change the order of the spoken consonant and vowel.
- Recognise அ and ஆ as different vowels.
- Notice the dot in க்.
- Compare க with கா and say each sound.
- Practise one vowel series with several consonants before adding another series.
Reading and writing are partners
Use the letter chart to recognise a shape, then open a letter lesson to hear it or practise writing. Give the child time to distinguish similar-looking letters. A careful attempt is more useful than quickly filling in the outline.
