Tamil Vowels for Beginners

உயிரெழுத்து ஒலிகளைக் கற்போம்

Knowing the vowel chart is one skill; hearing the difference between vowel sounds is another. Start with one short-long pair and practise listening before trying to identify it in a word. English spelling is only an approximation, so use Tamil audio as your model.

Three sound contrasts to practise

  • அ · ஆ

    Short and long vowel pair

    Listen to each letter separately.

  • இ · ஈ

    Short and long vowel pair

    Keep the longer sound clear.

  • உ · ஊ

Later, compare கு and கூ in words.

Listen for length

Compare அ and ஆ. Then try இ–ஈ, உ–ஊ, எ–ஏ and ஒ–ஓ. Listen to each sound separately before hearing them together. Avoid rushing the longer vowel or adding an extra consonant after it.

Sound length can distinguish words. For example, குடம் means pot and கூடம் can mean hall. In these words the vowel is part of a consonant-vowel combination, கு or கூ, rather than an independent உ or ஊ.

A listening-first practice routine

Use only two or three choices at first. Ask a family member to play one sound without showing its written letter. The learner points to the letter they heard and then repeats the sound.

  1. Hear a vowel once without reading an English cue.
  2. Choose its Tamil letter.
  3. Replay it and say it aloud.
  4. Find it at the beginning of a familiar word, such as ஆ in ஆடு.

Do not skip ஐ and ஔ

These vowels have their own sounds and letter forms. Practise them independently instead of forcing them into the five short-long pairs. ஐந்து gives a useful everyday example for ஐ.

Once a learner can identify the sound without a written hint, return to tracing and word reading. If two sounds remain confusing, practise that pair again rather than repeating the whole alphabet.

Put it into practice

The letter lesson includes audio replay. Compare it with அ next.
