Learn to Read Tamil
தமிழ் படிக்கக் கற்போம்
Reading Tamil means connecting written forms with sounds and meaning. A learner may understand spoken Tamil but still need help decoding a word on the page. Begin with what they recognise and build a small, repeatable reading routine.
Read in meaningful units
ம + ர + ம் → மரம்
Tree
Join the written units, then say the word naturally.
பா + ல் → பால்
Milk
Keep the long ஆ sound.
க் + அ → க
A consonant-vowel combination
Compare the consonant with and without its pulli.
From letters to combinations
First recognise the Uyir vowels and the Mei consonants. Notice the pulli dot: க் is a consonant form, while க includes the vowel அ. Compare க, கா, கி and கீ to see how a consonant changes with its vowel.
A vowel sign can be placed to the left of a consonant, as in கெ. Read the combination as a unit; do not pronounce the sign separately just because it appears first on the page.
Blend a familiar word
Use மரம் as an example. Identify the written units ம, ர and ம், say them, and then say the whole word naturally. Ask what the word means or point to a tree. Correct pronunciation without understanding is only part of reading.
- Look at the whole word before guessing.
- Identify the letter units you already know.
- Join the sounds and say the word naturally.
- Check its meaning, then read it again without help.
Check recognition without memorising a list
Mix the order of familiar words and ask the learner to find one you say aloud. Next, ask them to read it without an audio hint. If a particular letter is confusing, return to that letter instead of restarting everything.
The first learning-path goal offers guided vowel practice. For independent practice, open a letter in Read mode to hear it and see its writing demonstration without needing to use the drawing canvas.
Put it into practice
Listen, recognise the letter, and replay the writing demonstration.
