Learn Tamil for Kids

A first Tamil lesson at home

Choose one familiar word and say it naturally. Let your child repeat it or point to its meaning before introducing the written form. A child who understands the word already has a useful starting point for reading.

1. Say அம்மா and talk about whom it means.
2. Show அ on its own and find it at the start of அம்மா.
3. Listen to அ, recognise it among a few choices, then try tracing it.
4. Finish by finding the same letter again without a hint.

Build skills in a manageable order

Begin with Uyir, the twelve vowels. Learn Ayutham, ஃ, separately rather than calling it another vowel. Then move to Mei consonants and Uyirmei combinations. Small groups make it possible to review what the child recognises before introducing more.

Reading, listening and writing need different practice. Recognising a letter on a screen does not automatically mean a child can write it or identify it by sound. Revisit a skill when needed without treating the extra practice as a failure.
