Begin with the Tamil already in their life

Ask which family words, foods or place names the learner recognises. Choose one and show its written form. Connecting a known meaning to a new spelling is often more approachable than starting with an unfamiliar school vocabulary list.

Spoken Tamil varies across families and regions, and written Tamil may use different forms. Explain a difference when it appears without treating the family’s way of speaking as a mistake.

Keep conversation and literacy connected

A child can understand a word without being able to spell it. Practise listening, speaking, reading and writing separately, then bring them together. A family member can say a word while the learner finds it in print.

1. Choose a word the learner hears at home.
2. Ask what it means, without demanding a translation.
3. Read its Tamil letters together.
4. Use the word again in a real conversation.

Create a routine that allows mistakes

Set aside a short, predictable time for one letter group or a few familiar words. Let the learner repeat a lesson without losing face. Compare progress with their own earlier attempts rather than with a fluent-speaking relative.
